Wyze Cameras: Plug-in Models, Memory Cards and the Cam Plus Plans

Wyze built its name on low-cost plug-in cameras. Most of them join the network by reading a code from the phone’s screen and can record to a microSD card inside the camera, and the company’s paid plans layer cloud recording and smarter detection on top.

01 · Setup route

Where a Wyze camera is set up: the Wyze app

Wyze cameras are paired entirely inside the Wyze app, which also produces the QR code each camera reads. Wyze’s own setup guides, published under its own domain, describe the same route model by model.

Not part of setting up a Wyze camera

  • Remote control of a computer, under any pretext
  • A payment to anyone other than Wyze
  • A pairing code supplied by a website or a caller

How a Wyze setup works

A Wyze camera needs only power, the Wyze app and a 2.4 GHz network. While a camera is being added, the app shows a QR code holding the network details and a token that ties the camera to one account; the camera reads the code through its own lens, confirms aloud and joins the network with those details.

With no hub to manage, a Wyze camera is usually on the network a minute or two after it is plugged in. Each Wyze model has a guide of its own on Wyze’s documentation site, and the menus differ slightly from one model to the next, but the account and the code on the phone’s screen stay the same for all of them. Guide 1 explains why a code on a screen is one of four common ways to pass network details.

02 · The system

How a Wyze camera fits together

The camera does most of the work itself. The chips step through the five pieces one at a time.

A Wyze camera

What it does
Streams and records on mains power; most models read their network details from a QR code on the phone’s screen.
What it needs
A USB power adapter, and Wi-Fi on the 2.4 GHz band.
What depends on it
Everything else in the system.

The microSD card

What it does
Keeps continuous or event recordings inside the camera, with no plan involved.
What it needs
A card within the model’s size limit; cards rated for constant writing last longer.
What depends on it
Recording that carries on when the internet connection drops.

The home router

What it does
Carries live view and cloud clips between the camera and Wyze’s servers.
What it needs
A 2.4 GHz network the camera can join.
What depends on it
Viewing away from home, and alerts.

Wyze’s servers

What it does
Deliver alerts and remote viewing and, with Cam Plus or Cam Unlimited, keep fuller event recordings with smart detection.
What it needs
A Wyze account.
What depends on it
Remote viewing and every alert.

The Wyze app

What it does
Creates the account, generates the pairing code, shares cameras with other accounts and sells the plans.
What it needs
A phone signed in to the Wyze account, with two-factor authentication available.
What depends on it
The pairing code, which exists nowhere else.

Wyze’s pairing method needs the least hardware of any described on this site: no hub and no second radio link, only the camera, the phone and the router.

Like most budget cameras, Wyze models are built for the 2.4 GHz band, so their range and reliability depend on that half of the home network.

03 · Plans

What a Wyze camera does with and without a plan

One switch, two states: no subscription, and a Wyze plan. Every card shows how its feature changes between them.

Without a plan: 2 of 6 in full, with cloud clips in part. With a plan: 4 of 6 in full, and the last 2 on Cam Unlimited Pro.

04 · Genuine or imitation

Five things that carry the Wyze name

Some of these are Wyze’s own and some only borrow the name. Picking an answer shows why, and the counter at the bottom keeps track.

Item 1 of 5

https://www.wyze.com/

Correct. It is genuine. Not this one. It is genuine.

The name before .com is wyze, so the page belongs to Wyze Labs itself.

Item 2 of 5

https://wyze-qr-connect.example/

Correct. It is an imitation. Not this one. It is an imitation.

A page that offers pairing codes cannot be genuine: the code carries an account token, and only the Wyze app can produce it.

Item 3 of 5

A QR code shown inside the Wyze app while a camera is being added to the account.

Correct. It is genuine. Not this one. It is genuine.

This is the normal pairing route. The camera reads the code off the phone’s screen and joins the network with the details inside it.

Item 4 of 5

Wyze - Make Your Home SmarterWyze Labs, Inc.

Correct. It is genuine. Not this one. It is genuine.

Title and publisher both match the app Wyze publishes in the U.S. App Store.

Item 5 of 5

A caller offers to recover a camera’s memory-card recordings remotely, for a one-time fee.

Correct. It is an imitation. Not this one. It is an imitation.

A card’s recordings sit on the card, in the owner’s hands; no remote service is needed to reach them, and no maker sells one by telephone.

Sharing and account protection

The Wyze app can share cameras with other people, who see them under their own Wyze accounts rather than the owner’s, and the account settings offer two-factor authentication, which adds a one-time code to each new sign-in.

Because Wyze cameras are inexpensive and often bought several at a time, an account can accumulate many devices and shared users over the years. The app lists both, which makes it the place to see who has access to which camera.

Disclosed incidents

Wyze has disclosed incidents in which some customers were briefly shown images from other customers’ cameras, once in September 2023 and again in February 2024, and published accounts of both. Incidents of this kind are a property of cloud services in general, and they are part of why local recording to a card appeals to some owners.
